A research report is a detailed presentation of your research processes and findings. It includes quantitative data and a literature review of the existing research in your field of study. It is a formal written document that is structured with headings, sections and bullet points. It is classified based on the type of information presented as well as your target audience; a research report for a general audience will have more informal language while a research report for a specialized audience would utilize more technical and field-specific terms.

Another form of a research report is an audit report. This is typically used in a financial context where an entity is contractually required to provide an audit report on specific processes or procedures that are separate from the normal engagement of a financial statement audit. Examples of this are when an entity provides a special report to a member of the Senate based on price level accounting or when an entity prepares a customized audit report for a large donor that goes beyond standard financial statements.
