World news, also called international news, is a general term for news involving events in foreign countries or about a global subject. It may refer to news sent by foreign correspondents or gathered through distance communication technologies, such as telephone and satellite TV. It can also be a segment of a newspaper or magazine, or a radio or television program.
A world news segment can feature serious or offbeat stories. The offbeat ones may be humorous, bizarre or even silly. For example, WWN has featured several profiles of aliens, a story that claimed the Loch Ness monster was a merman and a report on a man who had a crush on Condoleezza Rice.
The world news segment usually includes an international political update, a weather forecast and a look at the day’s sports headlines. It can also include a look at other current events around the globe or in a specific country, including reports on culture, health and science.
In a world news segment, the anchors often interact with one another and with guests. They may joke about current political events, or recite funny facts or trivia. In addition, they can discuss their own personal experiences and beliefs about the world.
The world news segment is often followed by a short segment featuring music from a local jazz band or by a “World News Knows” segment, in which the anchors try to guess correctly the answer to a simple pop-culture question. Some nights, a WWN staff member gives a quick review of a new movie.
